December Festivities

As we celebrated Christmas, we started a new tradition of choosing a gift to give to Jesus and let Timothy pick out the first present. True to his own interests, he chose a gift of fruit tree seedlings. When the children show more understanding, we hope that the Lord will move beyond our own feeble efforts to convey the weight and wonder of Jesus incarnate to our children. I’m humbled at how wondrous and incredible the story of Jesus coming to rescue us is as we reviewed the story and Scripture with new eyes. When I became exasperated and wondered what else can go awry the world with so many awful new stories still streaming in during the last weeks of 2014, I was reminded of exactly why Jesus had to come to earth in the first place; to live perfectly and die in our place because we could not and cannot save ourselves. Behind the façade of happy pictures, the same brokenness and sin lives our home, too. This Christmas celebration helped me to experience more freedom in not trying to have it all together, and in letting Christ’s perfect work be the one to shine in my sin and shortcomings.

Grace did really well on a weekend road trip down to Portland, and continues to be a flexible and easygoing baby. She stands often and even climbs stairs with supervision. Grace wiggled to Christmas music – bobbing up and down, and shaking her arms and head excitedly to music; moves she likely picked up from her brother. One of my favorite moments this past month was catching both kids wave their arms at the same time to “Little Drummer Boy” while riding in the car one day. Grace is quite chatty nowadays and trying to form lots of words, oftentimes already “repeating” what we say. She even says “bye-bye” sometimes! She also raises her little hands to wave and reach towards people, showing us how interested and social she is lately. Her latest favorite food is nori (seaweed) snacks and she enthusiastically feeds it to herself. Her appetite for solids continues to increase and her curiosity for our table foods has as well. Grace loves her bedtime book so much that sometimes we wonder if it might make her too excited before sleeping. She’s been humming when I sing to her at night, and it’s super sweet to hear her little voice keep up with mine. Because she’s ours, we find her gentle disposition and happiness overwhelming on top of her cuteness sometimes. We continue to be deeply grateful for the gift she’s been to our family.

Timothy got to meet some friendly chickens on our trip to Portland and continues to fill our house with songs daily. He asked to listen to “O Come All Ye Faithful” repeatedly, along with “Angels We Have Heard on High”, “Joy to the World”, and “Go, Tell it on a Mountain“. It was great hearing him sing carols this year and be eager about our Advent reading activities each day. Timothy had many tastes of treats from a cookie exchange and various festivities this month, and especially enjoyed the frosting off the birthday cake we had to celebrate Jesus’ birth on Christmas morning. He was quite the gift-opener as he tore through his own presents, and insisted on helping the rest of us with our gifts.

One afternoon, I overheard Timothy reading to himself the last pages of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom in Chinglish,  saying “Big A, little A, Big B, Little B” in Chinese. It still surprises me how many quirky things he picks up from me. We also made very incremental progress in some Spanish vocabulary this month with a new book so hopefully the novelty won’t wear off too quickly. The Rs he can’t roll right now are pretty hilarious, though. 😉

We hope your 2015 is off to a good start – Happy New Year!

P.S. If you missed our Christmas video, you can check it out on YouTube.

Autumn blessings

Funny guyWe, especially Timothy, enjoyed the last edible apples from our apple tree this year, and we’re appreciating the local winter squash harvest with soups, roasted seeds, and baked goods. I also had a lots of great sister time this month with our visitors. 🙂 The kids and I are mostly indoors now because of the rain and cold. We went to a nearby pumpkin patch on a wet day to learn about pumpkins, visit animals, pick a pumpkin and go on a tractor-powered hay ride. Timothy enjoyed the farm while Grace napped and observed quietly. 😉

We had Timothy convert to a toddler bed and he graduated soon after to a twin bed with a toddler rail this month. Andrew and I were suprised he adjusted so well to the new sleeping arrangements in quick succession. Perhaps he was just ready to be out of the crib and use a pillow and comfy blanket, just like Papa and Mama. We’re pleased to see him snuggle into his bed everyday and relish the new setup. Timothy’s been building pillow nests in the family room for himself and Grace to play in; it’s one of the cutest things they do together. He’s also become quite the imaginative builder with some of Andrew’s help as he creates lots of fun buildings and objects out of Duplo blocks.

We love this toothless smileGrace continues to be resilient and playful with Timothy. I think her enthusiatic laughter has convinced Timothy that he’s quite hilarious. She’s learning the layout of our house and how to navigate small obstacles as she practices crawling. Her first consistent word has been “Papa”, and it’s so precious to hear her say when spending time with Andrew in the evenings. We love hearing her sweet little voice babbling more often lately. Grace has discovered her vocal chords for expressing louder and stronger opinions now, reminding us of her presence. Gone are the days of sometimes forgetting she was in the room because she’d lay, sit, crawl and play so quietly. She is progressing along nicely with solids and may need to learn to eat her food more quickly because Brother waits eagerly to eat up her leftover fruit purees and baby cereal puff snacks.

We said goodbye to Stewie rabbit this month, which was a bit of a downer for all of us. It looked like it was time since he was already over 10 years old, a pretty good run for a Mini Rex. While sad, we are thankful for the decade Andrew had with him, the fluffy entertainment he provided to many, and how much Timothy enjoyed him. We’re bit disappointed Grace didn’t get to enjoy him since Stewie was such a good sport with little ones, but are thankful we have plenty of photos with which to remember him. Timothy seems to miss him sometimes, but he seemed to accept/understand his death well enough (for a toddler, anyway) and moved on quickly after waving goodbye.

I enjoy the rhythm of our fall weeks with Cantonese Storytime, community group, women’s study group, and BSF. I’m learning much about studying the Bible carefully and trusting the Lord to displace my fears and anxieties. This has been especially timely as we try to move forward after losing our third baby in September, and figure out where he wants us as we seek to be faithful to him with where we make our church home.

Timothy’s 2nd Birthday Letter

Well, this post is a day late, but I’m glad you enjoyed your birthday yesterday. You got to eat Trophy cupcakes, get balloons, and have the birthday song sung to you numerous times at your request. It’s fun to see you understand a bit more about birthdays now. =)

You couldn't wait to dig in!
You couldn’t wait to dig in!

Happy 2nd birthday to you, Timothy! What a year it’s been for you and our family! You’ve become such a big boy and bring so many smiles to people everywhere we go together. Papa and Mama are so encouraged by how much you’ve grown and we’re excited to continue to discover more about how God made you.

Some of this year’s development in review: you starting walking consistenly at about 15 1/2 months, recounting memories to us at 17 months, playing imaginatively at 19 months, and speaking consistently with short sentences at about 22 months. In between was so much vocabulary development and signs to us that you’re just growing up and becoming more independent. You’ve definitely entered an age of deep persistence and it’s forcing Mama to grow in patience, that’s for sure!

You met your baby sister Grace at 20 months and have taken well to being her big brother. Your smiles and giggles with her are such a joy to witness and we love how you are always looking for opportunities to hold hands with and hug her. You often give her toys, stuffed animals, books and instruments to play with even though she can’t quite fully engage in those activities yet. It’s special to see your affection and care grow for Grace everyday as she becomes more aware of our home and family. You two are becoming cute playmates for each other.

You speak mostly Cantonese right now and appear to show a fairly good understanding of differences between English and Chinese and even switch languages in the appropriate contexts. I love hearing you string together sentences with all the words you’ve learned. Although that’s bound to change as you get older and master English, it’s so cool right now to watch you think and process the world in Cantonese. I’m already nearing my limit with how much more I can teach you, but I hope you’re able to retain a lot of it in the years to come. You already use a lot of English for words like dump truck, digger, bulldozer, backhoe loader, hummingbird, ladybug and numerous other vocabulary that Mama just doesn’t have in Chinese. 😉 Loud noises and some strangers scare you, but you’ve been brave and don’t usually cry when you’re scared. You’ve also been letting us know when you’re happy or sad, like something, and love pointing out that Grace is happy when she’s smiling.

In addition to your interest in all vehicles , you love basketball so much right now. You often excitedly point out squirrels, bunnies, birds, dogs, planes, helicopters, WM trucks, construction vehicles and other automobiles on the road. I treasure so many of the sweet things you do like dance and clap in the morning when you see me, blow kisses at the end of video calls with family, sing silly tunes, give me lots of big hugs and kisses, snuggle with Grace, and pet my hair. I’m sorry I don’t sit and play with you nearly as often as you ask me, but no chores or meals would get done if I did! It’s nice to see you discovering the world and play independently so well. I love hearing your little voice ask me to sit on the carpet and read with you, play instruments, sing to you, and play toys with you. We like to see you jam with the guitars and enjoy music so much right now. I love that you ask for specific songs and encourage us to play music more and sing as a family. Some of your current favorite songs are the “ABC song”, “Isn’t He Wonderful” (in English and Cantonese), I’m a Little Teapot (in Cantonese), “The Wonderful Cross”, and a song I made up to go with a bedtime book. It’s exciting that you’re starting to sing along more and do motions, too! You’re at such an adorable age (though Papa and I have said that almost all your life now!) and we enjoy you so much.

You quietly observe when outside our home, and it appears as shyness sometimes, but I’m not quite sure if you’re truly shy yet. It’s taken you most of the year to warm up and be more outgoing at Toddler Group, but you really enjoy it now. You’re no longer as bold with dogs, but you still love to see and pet them when they’re calm. Animals are kind of a mixed bag; you enjoy seeing them and being near them, but want to move on pretty quickly and don’t like when they make loud noises. You’ve also been pointing out animals and objects on your and Grace’s clothes, even telling us often which clothes you want to wear because of your affinity for fire trucks, construction vehicles, all kinds of bears. After being introduced to some new sweets this year, your favorite foods now include cookies, cake, baklava, muffins, pies and brownies. You still love fruits of all kinds and I’m especially looking forward to this year’s farmers market bounty with you!

Your relationship with Papa has evolved and I’ve enjoyed seeing you understand more about how he loves and cares for you. It’s so cute how you’ve been so eager for him to come home nowadays. It’s been touching to watch you grow in your affection for your father recently. It’ll be neat to see you two have more adventures together this year. I love that you have grown to look even more like your Papa, and I look forward to more matching outfits in the years to come. 😉

What - I don't get to eat the whole cake?!
What – I don’t get to eat the whole cake?!

I’m encouraged by your soft heart to receive instruction as we work through discipline so far. Papa and I are learning as we try to guide your heart towards obedience and understanding of our authority over and love for you. You help me see how much I need Jesus’ perfection and forgiveness as well when I see how sensitive and observant you are. I’m so thankful I get to read and teach the Bible to you because I’m learning more about the gospel and God’s great love for us as I grow in motherhood. It’s neat to hear you start to communicate your feelings and concerns to me, and I look forward to learning more about what goes on in your head this year. It’s sweet that when we pray, you like to mention so much of what and whom you’re thankful for recently. We pray that you continue to love books and grow to love reading, especially the Bible, and that you would grow in wisdom even at this young age.

We’re excited to see what this year holds for you, and are so blessed God gave you to us to care for as our firstborn son. Thank you for being such a wonderful part of our family, Timothy. We love you so much, little guy!

A calm January-early February

Breaking in new boots

With sunny days to enjoy, a meaningful baby shower thrown to welcome Grace, and the big blessing of having Grandma Ma already here to help us out, it’s been a great month+ counting down to the second child’s arrival in our family. It seems Timothy is more aware of a big impending change about to happen, so some days have been especially challenging with fragile moods and clingy tendencies. Unfortunately this also means Timothy experiencing more of his mama’s selfishness and impatience these days. However, we’re also having more sweet moments together and I’m cherishing the more frequent and affectionate snuggles, kisses, and “conversations”. Timothy’s language development has really taken off and it’s been fun to hear him communicate his thoughts and desires through strings of words. It certainly has kept me on my toes as I explain more situations and reasons behind rules and try to discipline consistently. He remembers a lot and shows understanding now so that’s been helpful, too!

Enjoying Redmond Toddler Group

I’m amazed at how much Timothy has grown since his little newborn days, and even since several months ago. While grateful for the technology we have to document some stages, I’m sad that once many cute phases are over, they’re truly gone and live only in our fallible memories. Spending more focused attention on Timothy has felt more precious, and I’m thankful I’ve gotten to enjoy this time with him. Although it’s hard to remember sometimes, I know I’ll miss that he sometimes begs for food all day long even after eating, doesn’t like being without me, requests lots of songs to be played and sung, flips through books to hunt for animals and food, and asks for hugs when he is older and outgrows needing us (especially me) so much.

We can’t wait to announce Grace Elizabeth’s arrival in our next post to this blog and appreciate you keeping up with our family!

October fun and photos

Here's another pine cone, Mama!
Here’s another pine cone, Mama!

October sure flew by for us! We are enjoying the beautiful autumn colors here and curious little Timothy is relishing all the pine cones and leaves he gets to pick up and examine. There are still enough dry breaks with all the drizzling around here that we’ve been able to take walks and explore outside, which is great for our busy little walking guy. Books, toys, indoor chores and yard work just isn’t getting Timothy’s energy spent enough at home sometimes so we’ve taken to roaming malls during rainy and cold days…some of you may be (understandably) surprised to learn I’ve become a bit of a mall rat lately.

A few highlights in Timothy’s development this month are his asking for many hugs each day, the loud smooches he gives to stuffed animals and (wants to for) dogs, and the snuggles he gives to his baby sister already while she’s growing inside of me. We’re pretty sure he probably doesn’t understand his big brother status, but it’s still very sweet that he likes to hug my growing belly and pet it affectionately… although, I probably won’t feel quite the same way if this continues after Baby Grace arrives. 😉 His little toddle looks like it’s going to develop into a run soon so we’re mentally gearing up for that, too. Timothypettingdog

Timothy’s languages are really coming along now and it’s so fun to hear him add “car”, “bus”, “truck”, “meat”, “bird”, “tiger”, “owl”, “bear”, “apple”, “pear”, “banana”, “avocado”, “hug”, “Bible”, “book”, “tree”, “eyes”, “pants”, “hat”, “shoe”, “socks”, “cat”, and the Chinese titles for all of his grandparents to his vocabulary as well as make lots of animal sounds. One of my favorites is the leaf-chewing sound he makes for giraffes – it’s so hilarious! I didn’t know what else to teach him for that animal but it cracks me to watch him remember that sound and repeat it when he sees a giraffe. He’s quite fixated on fruits and animals lately and it’s amazing to watch him absorb and learn so much through books, toys and interacting with us.

We truly hope you enjoy celebrating with loved ones and giving thanks in these upcoming weeks and months – thank you for keeping up with our little growing family!
